Verification of Citizenship
Verification of Citizenship
Who can apply for the verification of his or her Hungarian citizenship?
If you have proof of your Hungarian citizenship, you do not have to have to apply for the verification of the citizenship of your child under the age of 6; simply initiate the registration of his or her birth.
Where can I apply?
Citizenship applications may only be submitted in person. Mailed-in applications will be sent back without further consideration.
Applications by minors who are 14 years of age and older must be signed by both the minor and his or her parent (both must be present in person). Parents act on behalf of younger children, therefore the child's presence is not necessary.
The application may be submitted in at the representation in your appropriate consular district or during extramural consular days.
How much is the fee?
The verification of citizenship is free of charge. Normally you will not need a citizenship certificate, given that your data will be registered in the registry of personal data and addresses when your citizenship is verified. All Hungarian authorities with access to this database will know that you are a Hungarian citizen when, for example, you apply for a passport.
Information on the fees for vital statistics registration requests and an acknowledgement of paternity submitted alongside your citizenship application is available here.
All consular fees are payable only by debit or credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, Discovery).
Which form should I fill out?
The form titled „Állampolgárság igazolása iránti kérelem" ("Application for the Verification of Citizenship"). Please fill the form out with a computer or by a blue ink pen in block capitals. Please use full names in the Hungarian name order, e.g., Smith John Thomas instead of John Smith or John T. Smith. When referring to US cities, please also specify the state.
Which documents shall I submit for the verification of my citizenship?
Usually it is enough to submit your own birth certificate and your parents' marriage certificate if:
- you were or one of your parents was born in Hungary, or
- you or at least one of your parents had a Hungarian passport or ID card (booklet) before, or
- your Hungarian citizenship or the Hungarian citizenship of at least one of your parents has been verified before (e.g. if you received a citizenship certificate).
If the above conditions are not met, usually the birth certificate of the parent who is (presumably) a Hungarian citizen and his or her parents' marriage certificate have to be submitted, as well.
- Please bear in mind that only full ("long-form”) certificates are acceptable!
- If you are unable to submit certificates of births in Hungary or marriages officiated in Hungary, the Hungarian authorities will retrieve them from the archives.
If you or your ancestors left Hungary before 1945, it is beneficial to provide other Hungarian documents, e.g., old Hungarian passports and ID booklets, certificates of domicile ("illetőségi bizonyítvány") or old citizenship certificates, other old Hungarian official documents like school records, labor booklets ("munkakönyv"), military booklets ("katonakönyv"), address registration sheets ("lakcímbejelentő nap"), legal name change certificates ("névváltoztatási okirat").
Why is my marital status relevant?
Hungarian law stipulates that all vital statistics events of a Hungarian citizen (birth, marriage, divorce, death) are registered in Hungary. Without this registration your Hungarian citizenship cannot be verified and you cannot get a Hungarian passport.
a) What shall I do if my marital status is single (never married)?
If you were born in Hungary or your birth has already been registered in Hungary, you must simply attach your Hungarian-issued birth certificate.
If you were not born in Hungary or you do not have a Hungarian-issued birth certificate, please fill this form out. This English translation will help you in doing that.
- Please fill the form out with a computer or by a blue ink pen, with block capitals.
- Please use full names in the Hungarian order, e.g., Smith John Thomas instead of John Smith or John T. Smith.
- When asked about the delivery of the birth certificate, please tick option a) (delivery to a foreign representation) and specify "Washington, DC". We will send your certificate to the US address you specify.
Attach the following documents:
- Your birth certificate. Only full („long-form”) certificates are acceptable!
- Your parents' marriage certificate. Only full ("long-form”) certificates are acceptable!
- If you were not born from wedlock, the acknowledgement of paternity will be necessary.
- The copy of the document proving the citizenship of your non-Hungarian parent, e.g. a passport or a citizenship certificate.
b) What shall I do if my marital status is married?
Please refer to point a) to see whether your birth has to be registered in Hungary.
If you were married in Hungary or your marriage has already been registered in Hungary, you will just have to attach your Hungarian-issued marriage certificate.
If you were not married in Hungary or you do not have a Hungarian-issued marriage certificate, please fill out this form. This English translation will help you in doing that.
- Please fill the form out with a computer or by a blue ink pen, with block capitals.
- Please use full names in the Hungarian name order, e.g. Smith John Thomas instead of John Smith or John T. Smith.
- When asked about the delivery of the birth certificate, please tick option a) (delivery to a foreign representation) and specify "Washington, DC". We will send your certificate to the US address you specify.
Attach the following documents:
- Your marriage certificate. Only full ("long-form”) certificates are acceptable! If the certificate only includes the names of the parties, please attach a copy of your application to marry.
- The copy of the document proving the citizenship of your non-Hungarian parent, e.g. a passport or a citizenship certificate.
- If the bride's or the groom's family status at the time of the marriage was divorced or widow, submit the Hungarian-issued or foreign marriage or death certificate or court decree. Only full ("long-form”) certificates are acceptable! The foreign court decree has to be submitted with a Hungarian translation.
c) What shall I do if my marital status is divorced?
Please refer to points a) and b) to see whether your birth and/or your dissolved marriage have to be first registered in Hungary.
If the divorce was pronounced by a Hungarian court, or if your Hungarian-issued certificate has a remark saying that the marriage was dissolved by a foreign court, just attach the marriage certificate.
If you do not have such marriage certificate, please fill this form out.
Attach a decree from the US court which dissolved the marriage specifying the exact date on which the divorce took effect and its Hungarian translation. If you were not divorced in the US, please inquire in an email sent to appointment.was@mfa.gov.hu to see if you will need to obtain an Apostille or diplomatic legalization or have the divorce decree translated to Hungarian by an official translator.
d) What shall I do if my marital status is widow?
Please refer to points a) and b) to see whether your birth and/or your marriage, which was dissolved by the death of your spouse, have to be first registered in Hungary.
If your spouse was a Hungarian citizen, please submit his or her Hungarian-issued death certificate. If you do not have one, please have the death registered in Hungary.
If your spouse was a Hungarian citizen, please submit his or her Hungarian-issued death certificate.

Simplified Naturalization
Simplified Naturalization
We would like to draw your attention to the fact that when applying for Hungarian citizenship in the simplified naturalization procedure, one of the basic legal requirements is to understand and communicate in Hungarian language on a sufficient level, to be able to present the application for naturalization independently, without external assistance, and to answer the questions asked by the officer independently, in short sentences.
In case your command of Hungarian language does not reach a sufficient level, you cannot expect a positive decision.
The present information contributes to avoiding frequent issues related to insufficient Hungarian language proficiency during the simplified naturalization procedure and prevents you from becoming a victim of abuse due to the inadequate knowledge of the legal requirements (especially the lack of Hungarian knowledge) of the simplified naturalization procedure.
We invite you to pay particular attention to meet all legal requirements of the simplified naturalization procedure when submitting the application, pay special attention to learn Hungarian, as no statutory exemption will permit the lack of sufficient language knowledge, and the authorities will always directly verify it.
Should you need any additional information concerning the simplified naturalization procedure, please contact the relevant foreign representation or government offices where credible information will be provided to you. For managing your application, rely only on a representative who does not try to convince you of the fact that a positive decision can be received even in lack of Hungarian language knowledge.
You can find more information about the procedure on our Hungarian language version of our website.

Acknowledgement of Paternity
Acknowledgment of Paternity
When is an acknowledgment of paternity necessary?

When is the acknowledgment of paternity not possible?
A man cannot acknowledge his paternity if
- the mother was married during her pregnancy,
- or she divorced, and less than 300 days passed between the day of birth and the day on which the divorce took effect.
In the above cases, the legal presumption is that the husband or the ex-husband is the father. This presumption can only be contested at the court. There are some special rules for children born via an in vitro procedure. For clarifications, please send us an email at appointment.was@mfa.gov.hu.
It is also impossible to acknowledge the paternity if a court has already passed judgment on paternity.
Who must give consent to the acknowledgment?
The consent of the
- mother
- the legal guardian of a minor, and
- child if he or she is at least 14 years of age

What special rules apply to parents under 18?
If the parents of the child are under 18, their legal representatives should appear in person as well. For the validity of the voluntary acknowledgment of paternity, the father should be at least 16 years older than his child.
How can paternity be acknowledged in the US?
The father can only acknowledge his paternity in person, at one of our representations, or during extramural consular days. Both parents have to be present.

- Your child will get his or her Hungarian passport before his or her birth is registered. In this case, however, the name of the passport will be the same as the name on his or her birth certificate (e.g., John instead of János). If this is against your will, do not submit this statement on the child's citizenship.
b) in general?
All passport applications of children under the age of 18 have to be submitted by both parents in person as a general rule.
- If only one of the parents is able to be present, the other should sign this consent letter. His or her signature on the letter may be authenticated by a notary public or a Hungarian honorary consul (or a Hungarian consul, or by a Hungarian passport issuing authority, a Hungarian notary public, or a Hungarian guardianship office). If the signature is authenticated by a notary public, please obtain an Apostille certificate on it from the Office of your State Secretary.
- Parents must identify themselves (preferably with a Hungarian passport, ID card, or driver's license of a Hungarian parent and a passport of a foreign parent).
- A child under the age of 12 does not have to be present at the time of the application. Please bring a passport photo of the child in this case. The photo should have a white background.
- If only one parent has custody over the child, a document (court decree or death certificate) must be presented as proof.
- Please always bring the birth certificate of the child.

- a hazautazásig magánútlevél nem állítható ki és
- a kérelem megalapozott (menetjegy bemutatása, sürgősség igazolása stb.).
Hogyan nyújtható be a kérelem?
Az ideiglenes magánútlevél iránti kérelmet kizárólag személyesen lehet benyújtani. Kérjük, előzetesen egyeztessen időpontot a 202-362-6730-as telefonszámon.

- repülőjegy bemutatása a sürgősség alátámasztására
- konzuli díj

Kiskorú esetében a további követelmények:
- a gyermek magyar születési anyakönyvi kivonata
- mindkét szülő érvényes, személyazonosításra alkalmas okmánya (útlevél vagy személyi igazolvány)
- mindkét szülő jelenléte az alábbiakban leírtak szerint:
A 18 év alatti kérelmezők esetében az előzőekben leírtakon túlmenően felhívjuk szíves figyelmüket, hogy 18 éven aluli személy ideiglenes magánútlevél igénylésénél mindkét szülőnek meg kell jelennie a konzulátuson, vagy az eljáró szülőnek be kell mutatnia a távollévő szülő hozzájáruló nyilatkozatát, illetve a szülői felügyeleti jog kizárólagos gyakorlásáról szóló okiratot. Szülői hozzájáruló nyilatkozat tehető a konzuli osztályon, közjegyző, tiszteletbeli konzul, magyarországi gyámhatóság, útlevélhatóság (okmányiroda) előtt.

When is consular authentication necessary?
For documents to be used (served) in Hungary, it is often required that the signature on the document is authenticated by a Hungarian consul. Authentic copies and translations prepared abroad are generally only acceptable in Hungary if done by a Hungarian consul.
As indicated on the website there are different alternatives to have a signature legalized on a contract or other official documents, therefore, it is advisable to contact the relevant office in Hungary concerning the preferred and accepted method prior to submitting a request.
Please note that we do not provide authentication and legalization services during extramural consular days.
How can I have my signature authenticated by the consul?
Authentication of a signature means that the consul establishes the veracity of the signature only, and not the content of the document, for which the Consular Section bears no responsibility. The document will have to be drawn up by yourself in advance. We are unable to assist you in drawing up or typing out the document.
What documents do I need to have with me?
You will need the document on which your signature will be authenticated and a valid photo ID. Please do not sign the document in advance, as it has to be signed in front of our consul. You find the consular fees applicable for each signature to be authenticated HERE. Fees can be paid only by debit or credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, Discover).
What other steps are necessary if I sign for a company?
If you sign for a company, please also present the certificate of incorporation issued not earlier than 30 days before, and a document establishing your signing authority.
How can I get a certificate of life for my Hungarian pension?
The Hungarian pension authority requests life certificates from time to time. The consul will sign these free of charge. Please bring the certificate document and a valid photo ID with you.
How can I have copies of documents authenticated by the consul?
Just present a valid photo ID, pay the consular fee, and hand over the documents for copying. You can also mail them to the representation in whose consular district you reside, in this case, please send the following:
- the original document,
- a copy of your valid photo ID,
- a self-addressed, prepaid return envelope,
- a cover letter requesting diplomatic legalization, and including your contact details,
- this form for the payment authorization.
Fees vary on the number of pages of the document, so please make sure to check with us beforehand.
How can I have translations of documents authenticated by the consul?
The Consulate authenticates translations of English to Hungarian and Hungarian to English if the translation (prepared by a translator or by the applicant) shall be used in Hungary.
Attention! We do not translate documents. In order to authenticate English language translations, they must be complete and accurate.
You can submit your application for authentication either in person (by appointment) or by post.
What documents do I need to submit to have the translation authenticated?
- You should submit the original document together with the translation. Please note that during the authentication procedure the original document will be attached to the translation. In case you do not want the original (certificate, diploma, etc.) to be attached to the translation you are also required to send a copy of the document. Should you wish to have the copy authenticated as well, please mention it in your cover letter and include the corresponding sum in your payment authorization.
- Applicants should present valid proof of ID (ID card, passport, or driver's license) when attending the appointment. If the application is sent by post, a copy of proof of ID should be enclosed.
- Should you wish to submit your application by post, please send a cover letter requesting diplomatic legalization, and including your contact details.
- The consular fee should be paid by card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover), or please complete this form for the payment authorization. Fees vary, so please make sure to check with us beforehand.

What is an Apostille and how do I request it?
Hungary and the United States of America are member states of The Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. A document having an "Apostille" certificate will be directly accepted in Hungary without needing any further legalization by a Hungarian representation. You can have your signature authenticated by any public notary, then ask your local Secretary of State to attach the "Apostille" certificate to the document.

Hungarian-American Relations
Introduction
Hungary and the United States enjoy a balanced, value-based partnership built upon our common respect for democracy and universal human rights, and instiutionalized in forums such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the United Nations.
As a member of the European Union and NATO, Hungary partners with the United States to pursue common goals in Europe, such as stability in the Balkans and promoting democracy in Europe’s East. On a global level, Hungary and the United States have a mutual commitment to reducing the threats posed by climate change and nuclear proliferation, and supporting human rights, the rule of law, and peace and freedom for all. The two countries are bound together through extensive people-to-people contacts in business, the arts, scholarship, and a host of other exchanges.
Please explore the many facets of the Hungarian-American alliance using the links below:
Political Relations
Political and Diplomatic Relations
Hungary and the United States enjoy a balanced, value-based partnership built upon our common respect for democracy and universal human rights, culminating with Hungary’s accession to NATO in 1999 and the establishment of a formal alliance between our two nations.
Overview
Diplomatic relations between Hungary and the United States were formally established in 1922, although unofficial contact existed since the War of Independence. Colonel Commandant Michael Kováts, a Hungarian nobleman regarded as the founder of the American Cavalry, was one of the first heroes to lay down his life for American independence near Charleston, South Carolina. Friendly relations between the two nations were further enhanced through Lajos Kossuth’s visit to the United States in 1851 – his bust is one of the few foreign national’s present in the Capitol Rotunda. Kossuth was the second foreign national, after the Marquis de LaFayette, ever to be given the honor of speaking before a joint session of Congress.
In addition to the Embassy in Washington, Hungary has Consulates Generals in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Hungary is also represented by honorary consuls from major cities across the United States: San Francisco, Sacramento, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, New Orleans, Boston, St. Louis, Cleveland, Houston, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Puerto Rico.
The Embassy of the United States to Hungary is located in Budapest (http://www.usembassy.hu).
Bilateral Relationship
Since Hungary's democratic transition, the United States has provided economic and political support to Hungary's efforts to establish a vibrant democracy and market economy. Hungary and the United States now enjoy a balanced, value-based partnership built upon our common respect for democracy, the rule of law, and universal human rights, culminating with Hungary’s accession to NATO in 1999 and the establishment of a formal alliance between our two nations.
The successful political and economic transformation of Hungary, cooperation through bilateral channels and within NATO, and the recognition of Hungarian cultural and scientific achievements (in no small part by outstanding Hungarian Americans like Edward Teller or John von Neumann) provide a strong background for the dynamic development of our relations. Key areas of cooperation include democracy-building and the encouragement of democratic transition in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, counter-terrorism, human rights, energy security and security policy.
Hungary's participation in international peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts throughout the world – from Bosnia to Afghanistan, where several hundred Hungarian troops are currently responsible for leading the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Baghlan Province – its deep commitment to international counter-terrorism cooperation, and its support for NATO candidate countries and emerging democracies of the region have enhanced Hungary's importance for American foreign policy, especially since Hungary’s accession to the European Union.
Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2011 and consciously strove to keep transatlantic issues on the EU agenda and resolve important bilateral issues (e.g. Passenger Name Record Agreement, Data Protection Agreement) on the agenda. The highly acclaimed and successful presidential semester was instrumental in tightening our transatlantic alliance.
Our relationship is also strengthened by the nearly 1.5 million politically active and influential Hungarian Americans living in the United States. In June 2003 a bipartisan caucus was formed in Congress supporting Hungarian interests, co-chaired by Democrat Tom Lantos and Republican Ernest Istook, both of Hungarian origin. The Hungarian-American Caucus is currently led by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).
Hungary’s aspirations to achieve reciprocity with regards to visa requirements – the most important unresolved issue between our nations – were fulfilled in 2008, when Hungary entered the Visa Waiver Program, which meant that both Hungarian and American tourists could finally travel between Hungary and the United States without obtaining a visa.
Recent High-Level Visits
Minister of Foreign Affairs János Martonyi visited Washington in June 2010, where he was received by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, distinguished members of Congress (including Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Alcee Hastings, Shelley Berkley, Jim Costa, Steve LaTourette, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, and held talks with Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy Richard Morningstar and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.) CIA Director Leon Panetta visited Budapest in November 2010 and met Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. In April 2011 Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano visited Budapest and met with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
At the end of May 2011 a transatlantic "Golden Week” was celebrated in Budapest, during which Hungary paid tribute to President Reagan by unveiling his statue in Szabadság Square in the heart of Budapest and honored the legacy of human rights champion and late Congressman Tom Lantos – the Hungarian-born US representative, and to date the only Holocaust survivor ever to serve in the US Congress – through the official inauguration of an institution bearing his name. The ceremonies were attended by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Attorney General under President Reagan Ed Meese, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, distinguished Congressmen and Congresswomen arriving in two congressional delegations. Contacts on ministerial and subministerial levels are regular and intensive relations exist between the legislations of the two states.
In Feburary 2015 Minister of Foreign Affairs Petér Szijjártó attended the inaugural meeting of the American-Hungarian Business Forum in New York and met with high-level representatives from eleven major companies (Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, Eli Lilly, Pfizer and a Warburg-Pincus.)
