Hungarian-American Cultural Relations
With almost 1.5 million Americans of Hungarian decent, the exchange of cultures between our two countries was and remains significant. From increased American interest in Hungarian classical composers (Ferenc Liszt and Béla Bartók) in the 1930s to the return of the highly symbolic Holy Crown of St. Stephen during the Carter Administration.
Before World War I
Migration of Hungarians to the United States significantly increased at the start of the 19th century and was instrumental in the establishment of strong Hungarian-American communities across the US that helped to preserve the own language and culture. Bz far the three most common cities for Hungarian immigrants were Cleveland, OH, Chicago, IL, and New York City, NY. Many of these communities retained their language and cultural ties to their home country through churches, fraternal organizations, and Hungarian-language newspapers. The establishment of formal diplomatic ties and the establishment of consulates provided another important link between the two cultures. It was around this time prominent Hungarian-Americans began to excel. Journalist and publisher Joseph Pulitzer set new precedents for journalism with his aggressive news coverage.
The Interwar Period
The exchange of cultures between our two countries increased in the 1930s. American interest in Hungarian classical composers (Ferenc Liszt and Béla Bartók) and musicians increased, while Hungarians were captivated by stories about cowboys of the American West published in the newspaper Pesti Hírlap. American movies and music were also popular in Hungary. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Fox, and Warner Brothers all distributed pictures in Hungary, and the musical works of Irving Berlin, as well as George and Ira Gershwin were Hungarian favorites.
There were American students at the Academy of Music in Budapest, and in 1927 the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace sent a group of editorial writers to Hungary. The American Legation also worked closely with the Royal Hungarian Ministry of Public Worship and Education and the Hungarian Council of Arts, and Hungarian artists exhibited their work in the United States. In 1931 Minister Nicholas Roosevelt and his Hungarian counterpart, László Széchenyi, sponsored an exhibit of Hungarian art that travelled to Chicago, New York, Harvard University in Cambridge, and the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
Post-World War II
As the international political climate pivoted during the second half of the twentieth century, American foreign policy during the Cold War (containment, d'étante, the Helsinki Process, Reaganomics) presented both challenges and opportunities for closer cultural relations. In Hungary, some restrictions were slowly relaxed in the cultural spheres. Eastern European countries began to encourage tourism, and American newspaper articles spoke of the cultural, gastronomic, and historical attractions available behind the Iron Curtain. According to one report, more than 20,000 American tourists visited Hungary in 1963.
Cultural contacts were kept informal and nonofficial. Radio Free Europe reported that in 1961 novels by Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck, and plays by Arthur Miller were available in Hungarian translation. In late 1963, American author John Steinbeck and playwright Edward Albee visited Hungary as part of a trip to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
In 1965 a demonstration in front of the American Legation caused some damage, and Hungarian officials placed a Communist “freeze” on talks and cultural relations. During the 1960s the Inter-University Travel Grant Committee (IUTGC) and the Office for International Education expanded scholarly exchanges with Hungary until the Hungarian Government cancelled the IUTGC exchanges in November 1967.
The Johnson Administration also created the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis to create nonpolitical links between Western and Eastern Europe. In 1969 the United States sent a piece of moon rock to the National Museum in Budapest for Hungarian citizens to view as part of a global commemoration of the first moon landing. In 1972, during his visit in Hungary, Secretary of State William P. Rogers witnessed the signing of a scientific and technical exchange agreement between the Hungarian Institute for Cultural Relations and the US National Science Foundation.
In 1978 the Carter Administration returned to Hungary the highly symbolic Holy Crown of St. Stephen that the United States had been holding f at Fort Knox, Kentucky since the end of WWII. As part of the return, the United States sought to ensure that the crown would be available for viewing by the Hungarian people. Cultural relations between Hungary and the United Sates continued to improve throughout the 1980s.
In December 1981 the two countries signed an agreement establishing a 2-year program of cooperation and exchanges in culture, education, science, and technology. The first CSCE forum in Budapest was devoted to the discussion of cultural affairs, and was the first to be held in a Warsaw Pact country.
Democratization and Beyond
In 1989 President Bush met with Hungarian officials in Budapest and announced plans to open a Hungarian-American Enterprise Fund to promote wider cultural and educational exchanges. He also established a Peace Corps program to teach English in Hungary. The members of the Hungarian Diaspora in the United States followed events in their homeland closely during the volatile time of the fall of the Soviet Union and played an important role in the changes then taking place. One of the most prominent examples of cross-cultural communication took place in October 1990, when Péter Zwack presented his credentials as Hungary’s Ambassador to the United Sates.
In a symbolic attempt to come to terms with one of the darker pages of recent Hungarian history, President Göncz attended the dedication of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, in 1993.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall the US Embassy opened “American corners” in Pécs, Veszprém, and Debrecen. These partnerships between the US Embassy’s Public Affairs Section and host institutions continue to provide access to current and reliable information about the United States to the general public.
Defense and Security
Hungarian-American Defense and Security Cooperation
Hungarian and American servicemen fight shoulder to shoulder in Afghanistan as well as other key theaters around the globe. Hungarian-American bilateral military cooperation is concentrated in three major areas: joint training, deployment, and operations.
Common education and training take place within the International Military Education and Training program and with training for both senior officials as well as basic officer and NCOs. Military technical cooperation is also The Hungarian government and military emphasize the principle "in together, out together;” that is, the importance of coalition-building and the establishment of a joint plan of participation and exit; a key priority in the pursuit of improved interoperability and efficiency. We also place a premium on interoperability: Hungarian personnel uses US-supplied tactical equipment (HMMWVs, night vision goggles, combat radios) extensively in Afghanistan to increase the combat value of our deployed units.
Joint Deployments in Key Theaters Around the World
Hungarian and American servicemen fight shoulder to shoulder in Afghanistan as well as other key theaters around the globe. Hungary provides a multi-faceted contribution to the NATO-led ISAF mission, including combat forces that protect Kabul International Airport (KAIA), special operations forces without caveats, and mentors and trainers as well as a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Afghanistan’s Baghlan Province that has implemented civilian development projects in cooperation with USAID.
Hungary also one of 23 allied countries with troops deployed troops in Northern Iraq as part of the US-led Counter-ISIS coalition. Hungarian Parliament recently passed legislation that will significantly increase Hungarian financial contributions to the counter-ISIS coalition and increase the number of Hungarian soldiers serving in Northern Iraq from 150 to 200. Led by the United States, the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS was formed in 2014 and includes more than 60 nations. The broad international coalition carries out air strikes against the bases of the Islamic State, and trains and arms the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF).
Hungarian and American servicemen and women regularly train together and carry out complex special operations. Our Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT), manned jointly in Baghlan with Ohio National Guard troops, has trained and fought alongside a battalion-size Afghan force in its efforts to gain full operational capability. It is hoped the OMLT will soon be redeployed as a Military Advisory Team (MAT).
In 2013 an average of 14% of the overall force strength of Hungarian land forces were deployed across different operations and missions (NATO, EU, and other - over 70 % with NATO) in conformity with NATO’s usability target of 10%. Hungary also contributes around 200 troops to Kosovo Force (KFOR).
Contributions to Critical NATO Capabilities
As a regular host and participating member in the Strategic Airlift Capability Program (SAC), Hungary contributes to meeting critical NATO and EU capability shortfalls. The Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) based at Pápa airbase in Hungary remains the operational unit of SAC and features three state-of-the-art C-17 strategic lift aircraft regularly employed in diverse mission sets including supply missions to Afghanistan and humanitarian missions to Haiti.
In the wake of our losses, Hungary has strengthened its capabilities to counter improvised explosive devices (IED). In order to contribute to saving the life of our and allied soldiers, Hungary conducts NATO accredited advanced counter-IED “train the trainer” courses that help meet one of the most critical threats on today’s battlefields.
Hungary also leads NATO’s only accredited Military Medical Center of Excellence since 2009. The Center provides cutting-edge combat medical training and expertise to deployed forces. At the NATO Chicago Summit, Hungary announced that it will begin contributing fighter jets to the Baltic Air Policing mission, an important component of our Smart Defense initiative. Our combat aircraft will be deployed to help guard the airspace of Baltic states with no air force of their own, freeing up defense resources that they can invest in other capabilities.
Hungary also participates in NATO efforts to defend against weapons of mass destruction (WMD) by offering chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) defense assets (e.g. a mobile biological laboratory) as part of the NATO Reaction Force.
Hungary-Ohio National Guard Paternship
The Ohio-Hungary National Guard Program is one of 22 European partnerships that make up the United States' National Guard State Partnership Program (SPP), designed to link US states with partner countries for the purpose of improving bilateral relations and promoting regional stability.
Established in 1993, the Hungarian Defense Force and Ohio National Guard have conducted over 150 joint operation activities including small unit exchanges, exercises, and senior military and civic leader visits to deployments of Operational Mentoring and Liason Teams (OMLT) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In September of 2015, Commander of the Ohio National Guard Major General Mark Barton met with Hungarian Defense Minister Istvan Simicsko in Budapest.
After almost two decades of close cooperation and joint training activities between the Ohio National Guard and the Hungarian Defense Force, their training was called upon when they were jointly deployed in Afghanistan. Serving side-by-side in the War on Terrorism, these American and Hungarian soldiers have come to form an unbreakable bond in the longest military operation in the history of Hungary.

Tájékoztató a Magyarországon bejelentett lakóhellyel rendelkezők külképviseleti névjegyzékbe történő felvételének szabályairól
A Magyarországon bejelentett lakóhellyel rendelkező magyar állampolgárok főszabály szerint a magyarországi lakcímük szerinti szavazókörben szavazhatnak.
A magyarországi lakóhellyel rendelkező, a lakóhelyük szerinti névjegyzékben szereplő választópolgároknak, amennyiben a szavazás napján külföldön tartózkodnak, ahhoz hogy külföldön szavazhassanak, kérniük kell a tartózkodási helyük szerinti külképviseleti névjegyzékbe vételt.
A külképviseleti névjegyzékbe való felvételére irányuló kérelmet, amelyben a külföldön tartózkodó választópolgár kérelmezi, hogy a tartózkodási helye szerinti külképviseleten (nagykövetségen, főkonzulátuson) szavazhasson, a magyarországi lakóhely szerinti jegyzőhöz kell benyújtani.
Felhívjuk a figyelmet, hogy a magyarországi lakóhellyel rendelkező választópolgároknak minden választást megelőzően kérelmezniük kell a külképviseleti névjegyzékbe vételt, amennyiben a szavazás napján külföldön tartózkodnak és ott kívánnak szavazni.
A kérelmet a választás kitűzését követően lehet benyújtani, és annak legkésőbb a szavazást megelőző nyolcadik napon meg kell érkeznie a lakóhely szerint illetékes jegyzőhöz. Kérjük, figyeljék a határidőre vonatkozó tájékoztatókat!
A külképviseleti névjegyzékbe vételre vonatkozó kérelem benyújtható személyesen, levélben vagy elektronikusan a valasztas.hu felületen keresztül.
A kérelemnek tartalmaznia kell a választópolgár személyi adatain kívül annak a külképviseletnek (nagykövetségnek, főkonzulátusnak) a megjelölését, ahol a kérelmező a választójogát gyakorolni kívánja, valamint a kérelmező értesítési címét, ha a döntéséről szóló értesítés kézbesítését nem a nyilvántartott értesítési címére, illetve nem magyarországi lakcímére kéri.
A korábban, a 2014. évi magyar országgyűlési választást és/vagy a 2016. évi országos népszavazást megelőzően benyújtott külképviseleti névjegyzékbe vételi kérelem a 2018. évi választásra nem érvényes.
A magyarországi lakóhellyel rendelkező, külföldön szavazni kívánó, választópolgárok kizárólag Magyarország külképviseletein, személyesen szavazhatnak, levélben nem.
A külképviseleti szavazás időpontja főszabály szerint a magyarországi szavazás napja.
Felhívjuk a figyelmét, hogy ha Önnek korábban volt magyarországi lakcíme, és arról kijelentkezett, vagy az állandó lakcím helyett már csak tartózkodási hellyel rendelkezik Magyarországon, a külföldön élő magyar állampolgárokra vonatkozó szabályok szerint szavazhat. Tehát ebben az esetben a névjegyzékbe vétel kérelmezése, vagyis a regisztrációs nyomtatvány kitöltése szükséges!

Magyar Nyelvi és Hungarológiai ösztöndíjpályázat a külföldi egyetemeken magyar nyelvet és/vagy hungarológiát tanuló hallgatók számára
A 2018. szeptembertől 2019. június végéig tartó képzés - a Pécsi Tudományegyetemmel történő együttműködésnek köszönhetően - akkreditált egyetemi részképzésként 26–55 ECTS-típusú kredit megszerzését teszi lehetővé.
A 10 hónapos képzésre a KKM Balassi Intézetben kerül sor, amelynek keretében a hallgatók magyar nyelvet és hungarológiai tárgyakat tanulnak magas óraszámban. A képzés végén magyar nyelvből nyelvvizsgát tesznek, a magasabb nyelvi szintet elérő hallgatók hungarológiai témából záródolgozatot készítenek és záróvizsgáznak. A program sikeres elvégzését a Pécsi Tudományegyetem tanúsítvány kiállításával igazolja.
Az ösztöndíj összege: 45.000 Ft/hó
Az ösztöndíj tartalmazza a képzési díjat, a tananyag költségeit, illetve kollégiumi elhelyezést a képzés helyszínéül szolgáló épületben.

A pályázatokról a döntést a KKM Külföldi Magyar Intézetekért és Nemzetközi Oktatási Kapcsolatokért Felelős Helyettes Államtitkárság (MINOKHÁT) képviselőiből álló Értékelő Bizottság hozza meg. A pályázatok elbírálásánál előnyt jelent a magyar kultúrával kapcsolatos tevékenység, a nívós kutatási terv, illetve az anyaegyetemen zajló magyar nyelvi vagy hungarológiai kutatásokba, programokba való aktív bekapcsolódás.
A pályázat elektronikus beküldési határideje: 2018. május 31.

A Konzuli Szolgálat a rendelkezésére álló minden eszközzel igyekszik segítséget nyújtani ahhoz, hogy a konzuli védelemben részesülő bajba jutott
- az ügyeinek gyors intézését lehetővé tevő információk birtokába juthasson
- hátrányos megkülönböztetésben ne részesüljön
- élete, egészsége vagy testi épsége ne kerülhessen veszélybe
Miben tud segíteni a Konzuli Szolgálat a konzuli védelemre jogosult bajba jutottnak?
- Hazatéréséhez ideiglenes útlevelet állíthat ki az elveszett, ellopott, megrongálódott vagy lejárt úti okmány helyett
- Tanácsadással közreműködik hazatérése önerőből vagy rokon, ismerős anyagi segítségével történő megszervezésében
- Utólagos visszafizetés és díjfizetés ellenében hazatérési kölcsönt nyújthat, ha magáról saját vagy más forrásból gondoskodni nem tud, önhibája kizárható és a kölcsön nyújtása további súlyos érdeksérelemtől óvja meg
- Egészségügyi vészhelyzetben (súlyos és tömeges megbetegedés) tájékoztatja a helyi orvosok, kórházak elérhetőségéről, közreműködik az esetleg szükséges és orvosilag igényelt, illetve lehetséges hazaszállítás megszervezésében
- Válsághelyzetben tájékoztatást ad és szükség esetén segítséget nyújt a hazatéréshez, illetve az evakuálás megszervezéséhez
- Őrizetbe vétele, letartóztatása esetén – ha erről tudomást szerez – tisztázza ennek okát és jogi megítélését, figyelemmel kíséri fogva tartásának körülményeit
- Kérésére értesíti hozzátartozóját, szükség esetén a segíteni képes ismerőst
- Tájékoztatást ad az adott országban elérhető helyi tolmácsokról és ügyvédekről
- Külföldi haláleset esetén a Konzuli Szolgálat értesíti a külföldön elhunyt eltemetésére kötelezett hozzátartozót és tájékoztatja az eltemetéshez vagy a holttest hazaszállításához szükséges intézkedésekről

4th Saint Stephen’s Day Pilgrimage to honor August 20 National Day and Hungarian Christian heritage
Hungarians of the greater Washington, DC area commemorated August 20, the anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian State with a series of events. The Hungarian American Heritage House, in cooperation with the Embassy of Hungary, held their 4th Saint Stephen’s Day Pilgrimage to honor our thousand-years-old Christian heritage. The whole day of celebration started with a blessing from the guest of honor, Hungarian Bishop Dr. László Kiss-Rigó at the Our Lady of Hungary Chapel of the Basilica of National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, who then led the pilgrimage to the Marymount University. The festive mass and traditional blessing of the new bread were followed by a Hungarian picnic at the Marymount University, where President of Marymount University Dr. Irma Becerra, Hungarian Bishop Dr. László Kiss-Rigó, Chargé d’Affaires Dr. Zsolt Hetesy of the Embassy of Hungary and President of the American Hungarian Heritage House Stefan J. Fedor shared their thoughts on this special occasion.
